Synopsis

Growing up, they tell you monsters aren't real. That the things hiding in the dark are just stories meant to scare children.

Marek Tomlinson learned that was bullshit. Monsters are real, and they love the dark.

As a teenager, he came face to face with something that shouldn't have existed and spent years trying to convince himself that chapter of his life was over. Now a New York City detective, he has a career he enjoys, a partner he trusts, and enough real-world problems to keep him occupied.

Then a series of brutal murders points to evidence that's impossible—Nothing about them makes sense. And with every crime scene Marek investigates, something buried deep inside him begins to stir—something ancient, volatile, and not entirely human.

Then Agent Kaycee Gordon shows up and sparks fly.

She’s beautiful, dangerous, and works for the FBI's highly classified Special Crimes Unit, a division dedicated to investigating the things humanity isn't supposed to know exist. She's spent centuries hunting monsters, protecting humanity, and keeping a secret war hidden from the world.

As Marek and Kaycee peel back the layers of a mystery that stretches far beyond a handful of murders, they discover that the barrier separating Earth from violent neighboring realms is beginning to fail. Creatures once confined to legend are slipping through. Ancient enemies are moving in the shadows. And the people sworn to stand between humanity and extinction are losing ground.

Marek never wanted power.

He never wanted to be special.

Unfortunately for him, the universe had other plans.

And if he's going to stop a war that has been building for thousands of years, he'll have to accept the truth about what he is becoming before everything—and everyone he cares about—is destroyed.

Perfect for fans of Ilona Andrews, Sarah J. Maas, and Jim Butcher, Ascension is the first book in the Wardens of the Rift series, blending supernatural mystery, epic battles, slow-burn romance, found family, and a fresh new urban fantasy world.

I received Ascension as an ARC. As a reader of primarily Fantasy Romance that usually steers clear of Urban Fantasy I was very pleasantly surprised by Ascension! The world building is very intricate and immersive. The story itself is very unique and exciting full of action packed fight scenes, LAUGH OUT LOUD banter and a slow burn romance that is both realistic and gets you right in the feels! Our FMC Gordon is a badass that isn't afraid to get her hands dirty and is the epitome of kick ass and take names, not a damsel in distress. Then in walks Marek our MMC that although he's her subordinate, she can't seem to shake the attraction to him. Marek is a badass in his own right, confident, strong and always down for a good fight. He's drawn to Gordon as well but both are reluctant to cross lines and protect their secrets. There are memorable side characters that keep the banter bantering (Tucker is the King at deadpanned banter) and villains that you love to hate (the things that come out of Dharken Mohr's mouth)!! The growth and character arcs in both Gordon and Marek are very well written. Ascension is full of action packed fight scenes, EPIC battles, page turning intrigue and a very realistically written slow burn romance that doesn't overwhelm the story. Jay S Scott writes in way that is so descriptive that the intricate world he's building jumps off the page. And the pacing of the story keeps you engaged and wanting more! I can't WAIT to read this entire series and am anxiously awaiting book 2!!

"Ascension" by Jay S. Scott is a captivating fantasy read that earns a solid 4 out of 5 stars. While the beginning felt a little bit all over the place, it quickly settles into a compelling narrative, propelled by its strong characters and an absolutely impeccable ending that leaves you clamoring for more. One minor point of contention that kept it from a perfect score was the occasional repetitive retelling of events from different points of view. While gaining insight into multiple perspectives can be valuable, there were instances where it felt like rehashing information already presented. A more integrated approach, perhaps weaving both viewpoints into a single, comprehensive account, would undoubtedly enhance the pacing and flow, making for an even smoother read. However, these minor quibbles are easily overshadowed by the novel's strengths, particularly its stunning conclusion. The ending is not just good; it's genuinely impeccable. It masterfully builds suspense and delivers a powerful cliffhanger that will have you eagerly anticipating the next book. Despite a slightly scattered start and some narrative redundancy, "Ascension" is a thoroughly enjoyable journey with a powerhouse ending that makes it well worth the read.
